Our Story: The Genesis of Real + Raw

God Wrote It. We Just Walked It Out.

The story behind Real + Raw 30A. A journey through loss, health challenges, faith, and finding purpose in the unexpected.

Smiling family of five seated on a bench in a bright beachy shop, with shelves of decor behind them and orange accents.

Real + Raw was never just about food.

It was born from loss.

From unanswered questions.

From watching the people we love struggle with their health.

From discovering just how overwhelming it can be to navigate a world where the things we consume every day aren’t always what they seem.

But more than anything, Real + Raw was born from a journey we never expected to take. A journey that changed the way we looked at our health, our family, and ultimately, our purpose.

And while we may have been the ones to open the doors, we believe with all our hearts that this story was never ours to write.

God wrote it. We just walked it out.

This is our why.

It Started in a Season of Loss

Before Real + Raw existed, our family walked through a season that changed everything.

Within six months, we lost both my husband’s father and grandfather.

Two significant losses.

Two people we loved.

And the kind of grief that doesn’t simply disappear when life expects you to keep moving.

We were navigating loss, raising our family, working hard, and trying to find our footing in a season that felt incredibly heavy.

Stress was high. And somewhere in the middle of it all, my own health began to unravel.

At first, we assumed it was stress. After everything we’d experienced, it seemed like the most logical explanation.

I began seeking help, thinking perhaps my hormones were out of balance. But what started as an appointment to understand my hormones quickly became something we never anticipated.

I was sent to the emergency room and diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

I was sent to the emergency room and diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes.

Suddenly, the conversation wasn’t about stress or hormones anymore. It was about navigating a life-changing autoimmune diagnosis.

I spent approximately a year under the care of endocrinology, trying to understand what was happening inside my body and how to move forward. And while conventional medical care is essential in managing Type 1 diabetes, I found myself wanting to explore a more comprehensive picture of my health.

I wanted to understand my body beyond a diagnosis.

I wanted to ask deeper questions.

And I wanted to feel like myself again.

The Journey Back to Myself

Eventually, I began working with holistic and functional medicine practitioners alongside my understanding of conventional medical care.

For the first time, I felt like we were taking a deeper look at the bigger picture.

My nutrition.

My environment.

My daily habits.

My stress.

The products I was using.

The things I had spent years putting into and onto my body without giving them much thought.

It was eye-opening. And it was overwhelming. Because once you begin questioning the things you’ve always considered normal, you realize just how much there is to learn.

I started making significant changes.

  • I had my breast implants removed.

  • I had my IUD removed.

  • I began looking closely at the ingredients in our food, the products in our home, and the choices we were making every day.

These were personal decisions made as part of my broader health journey.

But for me, they represented something much bigger.

I was beginning to take ownership of the things I could control.

I started learning about organic farming, food sourcing, additives, environmental exposures, and the relationship between everyday habits and long-term wellness.

I became more intentional about:

  • How we ate.

  • What we purchased.

  • What we brought into our home.

  • And how we cared for ourselves as a family.

It wasn’t an overnight transformation. It was a process.

A lot of research.

A lot of questions.

A lot of trial and error.

And plenty of moments when I wondered whether I was doing enough.

But looking back, I realize that season was about so much more than changing my diet or replacing products in our home.

It was a journey of coming back to myself.

Of learning to listen.

Of becoming more intentional.

Of discovering that while we cannot control everything that happens to our bodies, we can become more thoughtful about how we care for them.

And little did I know, that was only the beginning.

Then Came Addison

If my own health journey opened my eyes, what happened with our daughter opened my heart in an entirely different way.

When Addison came home to us from the South Pacific, our lives were forever changed.

Here was this beautiful little girl, coming from a completely different environment and way of life.

And shortly after arriving in the United States, she began experiencing intense immune-related skin flares.

Her little body was struggling.

She couldn’t tolerate conventional infant formula.

We eventually had to prepare a specialized goat milk-based formula to meet her needs.

As a mother, there are few things more difficult than watching your child suffer and not having the answers you desperately want. I remember feeling overwhelmed by how sensitive her body seemed to be. I had already spent so much time questioning the ingredients and products we were exposed to in our everyday lives. But now I was looking at those same questions through the eyes of a mother trying to help her child.

And that changed everything.

I began thinking about the differences between the environment she had come from and the one she was now living in.

  • The food.

  • The ingredients.

  • The products.

  • The sheer number of things we encounter in modern American life without ever stopping to question them.

I couldn’t know exactly what was causing her symptoms, but the experience made me more determined than ever to understand what we were putting into our bodies and bringing into our home.

It was one thing to navigate health challenges myself. It was an entirely different thing to watch my daughter struggle.

That’s when this journey became something deeper.

More personal.

More urgent.

It wasn’t simply about wanting to feel better anymore. It was about wanting to create the healthiest environment I could for the people I loved most. And it made me wonder how many other families were asking the same questions.

How many mothers were searching for answers? How many parents were standing in grocery store aisles, overwhelmed by ingredient labels and conflicting information? How many people were struggling with their health and didn’t know where to begin?

We knew what that felt like. And we knew how lonely it could be.

The Part of Our Story People Don’t Always See

When people hear our story, they often focus on the health challenges, but there’s another part that shaped Real + Raw just as deeply.

The feeling of being misunderstood.

When you’re going through something difficult with your health, you don’t always have the words to explain what you’re experiencing. And sometimes the people around you don’t understand.

They don’t understand why you’re asking so many questions. Why you’re changing the way you eat. Why you’re suddenly reading every ingredient label. Why you’re seeking additional perspectives. Why something that seems insignificant to someone else feels so important to you.

We experienced that.

The questions. The skepticism. The lack of understanding.

And at times, the lack of support.

There were moments when we simply wanted someone to listen. Someone who understood why we cared so much. Someone who could offer education without judgment. Resources without overwhelm. And encouragement without making us feel like we had to defend every decision.

That experience stayed with us.

Because navigating health challenges is difficult enough.

No one should have to feel alone or misunderstood while trying to care for themselves or their family.

And somewhere along the way, that became one of the most important parts of our purpose.

We wanted to create the kind of place we wished we’d had. A place where people could ask questions. Where curiosity was encouraged. Where thoughtful choices were celebrated. Where families could find resources, discover new ideas, and connect with others who understood their desire to live more intentionally.

Not a place promising to cure illness.

Not a place claiming to have all the answers.

But a place where people felt supported as they explored what wellness could look like for them.

A place where people could feel seen, heard, and understood.

What If There Was a Different Kind of Café?

As our family’s lifestyle began to change, I started noticing something missing in our community.

We lived in one of the most beautiful places in the country. Along Florida’s scenic 30A, surrounded by white sand beaches, beautiful neighborhoods, and people who genuinely valued an active, healthy lifestyle.

But I kept coming back to the same thought: "Where was the place that brought all of this together?"

Where could someone grab an organic latte made with thoughtfully sourced ingredients?

Where could a family enjoy a meal prepared without industrial seed oils or unnecessary additives?

Where could people discover wellness products, learn about ingredients, and connect with others who shared similar values?

Where could healthy living feel beautiful, approachable, and enjoyable rather than complicated or intimidating?

I saw a need. But I never could have imagined what that need would become.

My husband and I have always been hard workers. We’re people who see a vision and figure out how to bring it to life. We’re not afraid of long days, hard decisions, or building something from the ground up.

But Real + Raw?

This was different.

Because as much as we worked to create it, we believe something much bigger was happening. Doors opened. People came into our lives. Ideas began taking shape.

And what started as a desire to share what we’d learned began growing into something we could never have planned on our own.

Looking back, I can only describe it one way.

God wrote it. We just walked it out.

Why We Do Things Differently

When you walk into Real + Raw today, you’ll notice that we’re intentional about the details. Not just the things you can see, but the things you may never think to ask about.

The water we use.

The ingredients we source.

The oils we cook with.

The products we clean with.

The farms and brands we choose to support.

The way we prepare our food.

These aren’t decisions we made because they were trendy.

They came from years of learning, questioning, and making changes in our own home.

We prioritize:

  • Organic produce.

  • Grass-fed and pasture-raised proteins.

  • Thoughtfully sourced ingredients.

  • House-made recipes.

  • Filtered water.

  • Cleaning products selected with ingredient transparency in mind.

We choose to avoid industrial seed oils, artificial dyes, and unnecessary additives in our food preparation. And we continue to look for ways to make our standards more thoughtful, transparent, and consistent.

Does that mean we believe every conventional ingredient is harmful?

No.

Does it mean eating organic guarantees better health?

Of course not.

And does it mean we’ve figured everything out?

Not even close.

But it does mean we believe the everyday choices we make deserve consideration.

Because when you’ve spent years questioning what you’re putting into your own body and feeding your children, those questions don’t disappear when you open a restaurant.

They become the foundation of how you operate.

We want our guests to know that someone has already spent time thinking about those details. That care went into the ingredients. That intention went into the preparation. And that our standards are rooted in something much deeper than marketing.

They’re rooted in our story.

We Never Wanted to Build Just Another Restaurant

We wanted to build something that mattered. A place where someone struggling with their health could find a little encouragement. Where a mother trying to make better choices for her children could discover a new resource. Where someone curious about organic living could learn without feeling overwhelmed. Where people could gather for movement, fellowship, and meaningful conversation. Where faith could be part of the experience. And where the community could come together around something positive.

Over time, that’s exactly what began happening.

What started as an organic eatery grew into a wellness market and a gathering place.

Run clubs.

Beach workouts.

Community events.

Wellness conversations.

Friendships.

Families.

People showing up for one another.

And somewhere in the middle of all of it, we realized something.

Real + Raw had become more than the place we originally imagined.

It was becoming a community. A place where people weren’t simply coming to eat.

They were coming to connect.

To learn.

To move.

To be encouraged.

To feel like they belonged.

And that’s when we began to understand the bigger picture.

Our Mission Is Bigger Than What’s on Your Plate

Yes, we care deeply about food.

We care about ingredients.

We care about where our food comes from and how it’s prepared.

But if all we ever did was serve beautiful organic meals, we would be missing the heart of why we began.

Our mission is to make intentional living more accessible, approachable, and supported.

We want to help families ask better questions.

We want to share resources that make navigating food labels and ingredient choices easier.

We want to introduce people to thoughtful brands, local farmers, and products we genuinely believe in.

We want to create opportunities for education, movement, connection, and community.

We want people to know they don’t have to change everything overnight.

And we want anyone who has ever felt misunderstood in their health journey to know there’s a place where they can feel welcomed and supported.

We believe that education is empowering. That community matters. That daily habits matter. And that people deserve access to information that helps them make informed decisions for themselves and their families.

We don’t want people to simply eat at Real + Raw. We want them to leave inspired to live a little differently.

Maybe that means choosing a new ingredient.

Maybe it’s learning how to make a healthier version of a family favorite.

Maybe it’s joining a community workout.

Or maybe it’s simply realizing that there are other people who understand why intentional living matters to you.

Whatever it looks like, we hope Real + Raw can be part of that journey.

The God Behind the Story

There are moments in life when you can look back and see how the pieces fit together. Even the pieces you never would have chosen.

The grief.

The diagnoses.

The uncertainty.

The questions.

The moments when you felt alone.

At the time, we couldn’t see what any of it would become.

We were simply trying to navigate the season in front of us. Trying to care for our family. Trying to make the next right decision. Trying to trust God when we didn’t understand what He was doing.

And yet, here we are. Building something we never could have imagined. Connecting with people we never would have met. Watching a community grow around a vision that began in some of the most difficult chapters of our lives.

I don’t believe God caused our suffering simply so we could build a business. But I do believe He can redeem difficult seasons and bring purpose from places we never expected. And I believe that’s what He’s done with Real + Raw.

We brought the willingness. He brought the purpose.

My husband and I have poured our hearts into this place. We’ve worked hard. We’ve sacrificed. We’ve made mistakes. We’ve learned more than we ever imagined.

But we will never take full credit for what Real + Raw has become.

Because this story is bigger than us.

God wrote it. We just walked it out.

And we believe He’s still writing.

This Is Why We’re Sharing More

As Real + Raw continues to grow, we want to invite you deeper into the heart of what we’re building.

Not just through the food we serve, but through the conversations we start. The information we share. The resources we discover. And the community we continue to cultivate.

That’s why we’re creating more educational content through The Raw Report.

We’ll talk about the ingredients we choose and why. What we’re feeding our family. The brands we trust. The questions we’re asking. The practices we’ve incorporated into our own lives.

And the lessons we’re still learning.

We want this to be a place where you can come for inspiration without intimidation. Education without fear. And encouragement without judgment.

Because we remember what it felt like to be searching for answers.

And if we can make that journey a little easier for someone else, then every difficult chapter that brought us here has helped shape something meaningful.

From Our Family to Yours

If you’ve made it this far, thank you.

Thank you for taking the time to understand the heart behind Real + Raw.

Thank you for supporting a small family business built on faith, conviction, and a desire to make a difference.

And thank you for being part of a community that continues to remind us why we started.

Our story isn’t one of having all the answers. It’s one of learning to ask better questions. Of walking through difficult seasons. Of discovering the importance of being intentional with the things we’ve been given. And of trusting that God can create something beautiful from circumstances we never would have chosen.

We built Real + Raw because we know what it feels like to struggle.

To search.

To question.

To feel misunderstood.

And to wish there was someone who could help make the journey a little easier.

We want to be that place for others. A place of:

  • Nourishment.

  • Education.

  • Understanding.

  • Community.

  • Where faith and purpose are woven into the everyday.

Because Real + Raw was never meant to be just a café.

It was our pain turned into purpose.

And while our family’s journey may have been the beginning, we hope the impact reaches far beyond us.

This is our story. This is our why.

And we’re so grateful you’re here to be part of it.

With love and gratitude,

Ashley & the Real + Raw Family
